Treatment Philosophy
Treatment is effective when therapist and client work together to understand and identify factors which precipitate, exacerbate, and maintain current struggles. I strive to tailor treatments to meet the needs and goals of each client, employing evidenced-based practices whenever possible and using interventions from various theoretical orientations. Diagnostic Evaluation
A thorough initial evaluation is performed prior to commencing treatment. Here, a client's social, family, medical, and psychiatric history is evaluated, sometimes occasionally using standardized measures, depending on the referral question. Together client and therapist develop a treatment plan, which may include a referral to a psychiatrist for medication. Common Questions Do you work with all types of clients?
Clients bring with them a rich history, diverse in ethnic, religious, sexual, socio-economic, medical, and mental health experiences. Knowledge about these experiences is not only integral to, but required for, competent and effective therapeutic interventions. I am constantly improving my sensitivity to and awareness about the culture from which a client comes. I understand culture to be shared experiences and beliefs, behaviors and practices, which apply to racial and ethnic groups as well as people from different religious, sexual, and socio-economic backgrounds. Some specialities: I provide individual and marital/couples therapy, and family interventions, when needed. At times, a mismatch between clinician and client may occur. If this happens, I will help clients find a more appropriate provider. Who would I see for clinical services? My name is Dr. Michael Freed. I am a seasoned clinician with over 10 years experience working with adults and adolescents in the following clinical settings: college counseling centers, hospitals, community mental health clinics, and other treatment programs. In addition to completing an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral program, I completed an APA accredited internship at the Veteran's Affairs Healthcare System in Pittsburgh, PA. There, and through my experiences at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for the past three years, I have gained unique and invaluable experience working with veterans and active duty service members. Currently my time is split between clinical work and research. This combination of experiences helps me stay connected to important developments in clinical research while maintaining a thriving clinical practice in my home community. How do I schedule an appointment?
If you are interested in our clinical services, please contact me by e-mail mfreed@cbhw.org (please be aware that email is not confidential) or by phone 301-502-4667. I offers a free, brief (approximately 15 minute) telephone consultation to determine whether therapy would be beneficial for you. A first appointment can be scheduled by the end of the phone consultation. Often the first session can be scheduled within a few days after the consultation. Appointments for clinical services are flexible. Typically, clients meet with me after regular business hours (after 4:00pm) on weekdays, or mornings and afternoons on weekends. How do I pay for clinical services? I do not participate directly with health insurance plans. However, services are usually eligible for "out-of network" reimbursement by most insurance companies. You may contact your insurance provider directly to determine your specific coverage. Payment for services are due at the time of service in the form of cash, money order, or personal check. Credit cards will be accepted in the near future. | |
